Background

Being able to upload a document to an assignment is one of the most important Moodle skills to master. 

Step-by-step guide

To upload a document to a Moodle assignment from your laptop:

  1. Prepare to upload your file by locating the document on your laptop using Windows Explorer. 

  2. Open your preferred web browser.  It It is helpful to have the browser set to 'not maximised' so you can see both the browser AND and Windows Explorer at the same time.  This This will help you drag and drop your file between windows easily.  See See the screenshot under Additional resources.
     
  3. Login to Moodle.
     
  4. Browse to the course you are preparing the assignment for.
     
  5. Locate the assignment on the course page.  Make Make sure you are opening the correct assignment if more than one is visible.
     
  6. In the assignment screen click Add submission.
     
  7. To submit your file to the assignment:

    • Drag and drop your assignment from your files area of your laptop to the dotty File submissions box ORor
    • Use the File select tool to locate and select your document.

      Note that sometimes assignments may be setup to allow you upload more than one file.

  8. Once your assignment file is visible in the submissions box, click the Save changes button.
     
  9. Your file should now be visible in the File submissions area in the assignment screen.

If you are having trouble uploading a document, check that it is within the 30mb file size limit. PowerPoint files with lots of images often have this issue. Saving a larger document as a PDF may might be the solution to this problem.
