Why does my password expire?

The longer you keep using the same password, the more likely it is that someone will discover your password and use it. If someone steals your password, they can see your grades, upload random files into yuor your assignments, download any files you have saved to Moodle, change your password or send a Moodle messages pretending to be you. So having your password expire reminds you that it is important to keep changing it.

Password expiry periods are a standard part of organisational security. Older passwords are more likely to be known by other people, especially in a school setting when people are entering passwords surrounded by keen eyed and not always benevolent students.

Passwords that are changed regularly greatly reduce our risk of having our network security compromised by hacking attempts or by a person using someone else’s login.

Your password is set to expire to reduce the opportunity for someone to misuse your password.

Where do I need to re-enter my new password?

What applications use it?

While you are on the school network some programs will automatically recognize your ~~credentials~~. These include ~~Synergetic~~ (desktop), Moodle and ~~Outlook~~.

All the FCCC applications that you can access through a web browser will require you to use the new password. If you have your password saved in the web browser you will be prompted to update it for each application the first time you use the new password. If you use several web browsers or access the web applications from several computers you will need to update your password once for each.

Shortcuts to all web applications that use the network login and password can be found here: launch.flinders.vic.edu.au These include Moodle, ~~Synweb, Alfresco~~, ~~Webmail, Helpdesk, the Knowledge Base~~ and the Library.

If you log into a school computer after changing your password, you should not need to re-enter it when you next access Moodle. However, if you access Moodle from home or on your BYOD device, you will need to re-enter the password.

Web browsers can save passwords which saves you the effort of having to re-type them every time you log into website. Because of this, you will need to be careful that you enter the new password next time you log into Moodle, and then allow your browser to update the password. If you use multiple devices and/or multiple web browsers, you may need to do this for each.

What if I am not at school to change my password?

What if I am using a BYOD device?

When your password expires you will be unable to connect to the school network.
