I keep getting an error message about 'cookies'

Problem

When I attempt to log into Moodle, I see a message telling me that I need Cookies enabled.

Solution

The short answer is: you need to set your web browser to allow ‘cookies’ for the Moodle (ourFlinders) site. In general, you need to enable a setting in your browser that will 'Allow all Cookies’ or have it block cookies except for http://our.finders.vic.edu.au. How you do this depends on which web browser (and what type of device) you use to view Moodle.

For detailed instructions on how to enable Cookies in your web browser, we recommend you visit the Enable Cookies website (www.whatarecookies.com). This site demonstrates how to enable cookies on different browsers and devices.

So what is a cookie?

A cookie is a tiny piece of information that your web browser stores on your device when requested by a web site. The text contains details of your interaction with that web site, which are then used to personalise the site to you. For example, the cookie might contain an ID that the web site can use to recognise you and customise pages for you.

Some people think that cookies are dangerous or a problem. This is largely misinformation. Web developers can use cookies to improve the functionality of a website, and save you having to key in your details every time you move to a different page. Cookies cannot be used to transmit viruses or steal personal information stored on your computer. Having said that, some websites sell the trivial details they collect, such as information on browsing habits, to third parties who use the information for marketing purposes. This is the main reason why some people block cookies.

The problem with blocking cookies is that you can remove legitimate functionality from a website. ourFlinders needs to use cookies to keep you logged in. In accordance with our privacy policy, we will never use information stored in cookies for anything other than optimising your experience when using our sites.
